The way Tennessee handles alimony is a number of different ways. There are in Tennessee four different forms of alimony. And the purpose of transitional alimony is to help a spouse transition out of divorce. And what that is supposed to mean is that when you’re married and uh parties are paying for their bills on a joint basis, one party might make less than the other party is accustomed to having a portion of their bills paid by the other party. The other forms are rehabilitative, incelo, and infuturo. Rehabilitative is if the other spouse needs to go to school or get some type of educational or vocational training so that they can get a job and pay for their own bills. That is so they can be rehabilitated. And so that is also a short-term duration of alimony. The other two types of alimony are for long-term marriages. Incelo is a set sum that’s paid by one spouse to the other and for the most part it’s usually paid in monthly installments. Infuturo is alimony for the remainder of the other spouse’s life. And the catch to infruturo versus incelo is that infruturo can be modified by a court at any time after the initial award. Incelo is typically non-modifiable. Those are the four ways that Tennessee handles the types of alimony. Um how that is paid and how that is calculated can depend on a number of different issues.
